Saying Goodbye to My 'Beautiful Lengths'

2009 is my year of change. I decided I will go for broke and lop off my locks. For those of you who know me, this will most likely come as a shock to you. My hair at present is down to the middle of my (uh hem) posterior, and honestly, I am getting tired of all the maintenance. My friend Patty made a reference to Crystal Gayle, but it's not quite that long - yet. Given another year and I could say yes, Crystal and I would have something in common.

What prompted me to make this decision? Several, and I will tell you how this all came to be.

For the past year, I have done nothing but complain about how my hair gets in the way of everything. It doesn't matter what I am doing, it seems to be front and center of whatever activity I try to accomplish. It's my own fault, I have been too lazy to do anything about it. A few weeks ago, my editor called me and asked me what I would be writing about for the upcoming 'green issue', related to organizing or recycling, but I didn't have an immediate answer. I told her I would get back to her. I racked my brain for two solid days wondering what in the world I could write about that hasn't been covered before, and the idea hit me - recycle my hair!

How is that 'green' or related to organizing? Well, let me break it down for you.
  • The hair itself will be recycled into a wig through Beautiful Lengths for cancer patients.

  • The amount of water I will save washing it will be more than half of what I use now helping our natural resources.

  • The amount of shampoo and conditioner I currently use will diminish, saving money.

  • The time spent to blow dry my hair (20-25 minutes) will be cut in half and I will save electricity and be a plus on the organizational side saving time and time management.

See? It all makes sense in more ways than one. Save the environment, help someone in need and recycle. When is the big event? Sometime next month - date TBA. This whole process will be chronicled by the magazine - photos and all. I will keep you posted...
